Supplements 101 for Menopause

Menopause represents a time for change in our nutritional requirements.

For example, maintaining a healthy bone density with appropriate nutrition becomes increasingly important as falling oestrogen levels increases the risk of bone density loss.

As a Nutritional Therapist and Natural Menopause Expert I'm often asked what supplements I recommend and so I created this guide to show which supplements you need for foundational health at this time and which additional supplements will help with specific symptoms that you might be currently experiencing.

Supplements are a very easy first step to implement on your journey to managing your menopause and can be a great starting point when you are feeling low and helpless.

Adding in the foundational supplements (rather than just one supplement) can make a tremendous difference to how well you sleep, anxious feelings, moods, how you feel & general wellbeing.

In an ideal world we would get as many necessary nutrients as possible from food, but….in the real world, even if you’re batch cooking from scratch and on one of my nutrition plans such as the 10 Day Detox...it’s usually not entirely realistic.

Benefits of Supplements

In an ideal world we would get the nutrients we require from food, but….in the real world, even if you’re batch cooking from scratch and following one of my meal plans from the Hot In A Good Way membership...it’s usually not entirely realistic.

Sometimes certain produce is out of season or a tad over budget, or you may need to sleep better but just struggle to eat that much chard or pumpkin seeds on a daily basis.

Plus, it takes a LOT to track how much of each vitamin you’re getting for every serving of what you’re cooking and these days many foods don't contain the same level of nutrients as they did in the past.

Added to that many of us have digestive issues that mean we aren't able to digest the food and utilise the nutrients as well as we should.

Given all these issues, supplements can an excellent first step to manage your symptoms.

However, you need to ensure that supplements don't become another "band-aid" just like a prescription. And while it's a "natural" band-aid...it's still not resolving the root cause if that's all you're doing.

Supplements are not a standalone protocol.  They are a tool in our menopause toolbox.

Because we can't take a bottle of Ashwaghanda and a probiotic and NOT eat real food, get quality sleep, address emotional health or clean up the hormone disruptors in the products that we use every day.

The combination of correct supplementation alongside the things listed above -- creates a well-balanced protocol that truly allows your body to heal.

The quality of the supplements that you use is vital. I recommend brands that are whole food, as research consistently shows that synthetic nutrients are no replacement for a healthy, balanced diet. Getting natural nutrients from whole foods is always a better option. However, if you are lacking in a specific nutrient, then taking a supplement can be beneficial.
